3. Castelnuovo - Borgo a Mozzano

Up to Gallicano this walk is shared with the Via di San Pellegrino: it is a pleasant walk, even though the first part of it, up to Cascio, has been paved.
After Gallicano, at Colombaia we leave the main route to climb to Barga following the signs poiting at San Bernardino. The surface is paved but there is no traffic and thearea is rural.
Arriving atBarga a medieval historical and artistic town of the Middle serchio Valley, famous for its monuments and views of the Alpi apuane. To reconnect with the main route of the Volto Santo we shall descend to Loppia, where a handsome medieval bridge will enable us to reach Filecchio and from there quickly to Ponte all’Ania.
Once passed Piano di Coreglia we reach Ghivizzano through country roads. We cross the Serchio river at Calavorno continuing to Pian della Rocca by a short tract of the Royal Road Ludovica where one must pay attention to the heavy traffic. We then climb to Rocca, walking along a forest trail, to descend to Borgo a Mozzano passing through Pieve di Cerreto.
